The Chief Medical Officer of Northern Ireland, Dr Michael McBride, along with his counterparts in England, Scotland and Wales, has agreed to increase COVID restrictions in Northern Ireland. The moves Northern Ireland to Level 4 restrictions. The Northern Irish executive has agree to these restrictions. The new restrictions come into effect from 6pm on September 22, 2020. They included no mixing of households and no more than six people in a private garden.

The PSNI have arrested two teenager boys following an outbreak of disorder in the city\'s Galliagh area earlier this week. The two boys were arrested tonight (6th August, 2020) on suspicion of riotous behaviour and attempted criminal damage. One of the boys has also be arrested on suspicion of possessing a petrol bomb.

Noble Peace Prize winner and former leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party(SDLP) John Hume has died. Born in Derry in 1937 he became an Independent Nationalist member of the Parliament of Northern Ireland in 1969. He was a leading figure in the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles. He served in the short lived power sharing executive as Minister for Commerce in 1974. He became the second leader of the SDLP in 1979 until 2001, where he worked toward achieving the Good Friday Agreement with Unionist and Nationalist in Northern Ireland.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has given a speech to outline the solution found to retain a soft boarder on the island of Ireland. This was one of three major issues preventing the UK and the EU continuing to phase 2 of the negotiations on the exit of the UK from the EU, AKA Brexit. Citizen Rights and a financial settlement are the 2 other issues. The negotiators can now move on to work out the detail of what has been agreed and to talk about transition phase, free trade and the new relationship between the EU and the UK.
